India is one of the most populous countries of the world, in which 15% of the total population of the world resides. India's population in 1971 was 550 million which increased to 684 million, in 1981. In 1991 cencus the population figure jumped to 845 million. In 1994 end it was over 900 million.
India, a developing country, comes second to china in the world in figures of population. The growth of population, besides neutralising all development efforts, brings distress to the community, to the family and individuals.
What, then needs to be done? The remedy is to reduce the number of births. In order to stabilise the relationship between population and the basic necessities of life, we must bring our birth rate down from 41 to 25 per thousand as quickly as possible.
