VarLaxmi Vratam is generally performed on Second Friday of the Shravana masam. If you cannot do the vratha on the specified date, you can perform it on any Friday of the Shravana masam.
Significance of Varalakshmi Vratam
Goddess Lakshmi resembles wealth and prosperity. The whole month of Shravan is dedicated to the devine couple of Vishnu and Lakshmi Devi and thus worshiping Laxmi Goddess in this moth is considered auspitious. Additionally, a Friday is considered to be auspicious for Laxmi Puja. Combining these two factors, the Sravan Srukravar is considered to be the most apt day to perform this ritual.
Ashta Lakshmi or the eight forces of the world are – Primeval force (Aadi Laxmi), -Wealth (Dhana Lakshmi), -Courage (Dhairya Laxmi or Veera Lakshmi), -Wisdom (Vidhya Laksmi), -Children or family development (Santana Laxmi), -Success (Viajaya Lakshmi), -Food (Dhanya Laxmi) and -Strength (Gaja Lakshmi) Thus worshiping Laxmi will bring all the happiness in the world by fulfilling us with all the energies in the world.
VaraLakshmi Vratam and Shravana Masam
The birth star of Lord Vishnu is Shravana Nakshatra. Being named after his birth star, Shravan masam is the month when Godess Laxmi performs pooja for Lord Vishnu. Laxmi Devi is supposed to be the happiest in this month. And thus if people worship her in this moth they don't just get her blessings but also Lord Vishnu's blessings.
Vara Laxmi Vrata is observed on the Friday which comes before Shravan Purnima during Shravan month.
Story of Vara Lakshmi Vratam – Vara Lakshmi Vratha Kadha
In a town called Kundina, there lived a humble and kind natured Brahmin woman named Charumathi. She loved her husband and family very much. Impressed by her sincere devotion towards her family, Laxmi Devi came into her dreams one night. She asked her to perform the Vara Laxmi pooja and also explained her the details, procedure and when to do the pooja. She told her that the Friday just befor ethe Shravana Purnima is a completely apt day for the puja.
Charumati woke up and told about the dream to her family, who took the news in a supportive manner and enchoraged her to proceed with the pooja.Charumati told about the pooja to her friends and neighborhood and the word spread out in the town. Thus on that year, all the women from the town worshiped varalakshmi devi with their sincere dedication. They all chanted "Padmaasane Padmakare sarva lokaika poojithe Narayana priyadevi supreethaa bhava sarvada"
The story says that impressed by their dedicated pooja Laksmi Devi appeared in front of them and blessed them with everything they ever wanted in life. Their houses did not have any lack of food ,lack of jewellery. The families in the town lived happily ever after doing this pooja every year. Since then the new spread and now the whole South India performs this pooja.
