Polymer contains large number of monomer.

Definition of Polymer

The term polymer is derived from two Greek words. The word 'mer' means a unit and a monomer is a single unit end a polymer consists of many units. The monomers are jointed together end to end in a polymerization reaction. A polymer, therefore, consists of thousands of monomers jointed together. The polymer molecule is called a macro-molecule.

A polymeric material consists of a large number of these long chain molecules. Polymers are also made from inorganic chemicals such as silicates and silicones. The naturally occurring polymers include proteins, shellac, starch, resins, and cellulose. There are also superior types of polymers which are obtained synthetically. Such polymers are polyethylene, polystyrene, Teflon, nylon, terylene and rayon.
