Kondapalli bommalu/toys of Andhra Pradesh

Kondapalli is a small village, nearly 25 Km from Vijayawada, in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh which is famous for its bommalu / toys. Kondapalli bommalu are one of most famous handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh that have gained international fame. These are eco-friendly toys and are quite different from others in their make. The toys are made of softwood called 'tella Poniki' in Telugu language. Sawdust, tamarind seed powder, enamel gums and watercolors are used by the artisans for making these toys. Elephant ambari (caparisoned elephants), Dasaavataarala bommalu and many more such toys are in demand in international market as well.

Etikoppaaka toys of Andhra Pradesh

Etikoppaaka is a place located near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. These are the traditional toys that depict the rich cultural heritage of the state. These are also called the lakka bommalu, i.e, lacquer toys as the wooden toys after carving are coated with lacquer and then designs are painted on the toys with vegetable dyes that are fast. Veena - the musical instrument, different types of birds, meerabai are some famous toys of etikoppaaka.

Bidri work in Andhra Pradesh

The state capital Hyderabad is famous for its bidriware which is indeed an exquisite craft. Beautiful designs of shining silver on a dull black background are typical bidriware. The craft originated in Bidar, Karnataka and later spread to Andhra Pradesh which presently produces the best quality of bidriware. The artisans need to be very skillful, patient and creative as well in making the beautiful art / decorative pieces.

Kalamkaari work in Andhra Pradesh

Kalamkaari is a very ancient and popular work of Andhra Pradesh. It is a method of painting with natural dyes on fabrics ranging from cotton to silk with the help of a kalam (pen) and hence the name kalamkaari. Sri Kaalahasti and Machilipatnam are the places where this work is mostly done.

Warangal carpets

Warangal carpets are one of the most popular handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh. These carpets are mainly made of wool with intricate and complicated patterns of designs on them. The Warangal carpets are made of handspun wool and jute thread which give them very attractive and fine designs.

Bead embroidery mainly done on fine saaris and blouses, silver filigree work and leather puppets are the other famous handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh.
